Open Realty and phpBB Bridge

Posted January 30th, 2009 by Jay

As you may or may not know I am making an awesome project come to life finally.  I’ve been up for over 6 hours working on just a template for my new Second Life Real Estate listing website.  I’ve learned a lot about jQuery and it’s plugins lately, but most of all, I’ve learned that the software I’m using, Open Realty, does not have a bridge for phpBB.  Well that’s sad :-(

You see, I have a support system built into the website, and I want users to be registered with the forum when they register with the website also.  Furthermore, I want them to be logged in on both the website and the forum if they choose to login.  Well I’ve been looking over the OR files lately, mainly login.inc.php and user_manager.inc.php.  The login file processes all login information and can easily be modified, along with the user_manager file, whereas this file checks registration information and processes it accordingly.  The cool part, is that both of these files are easily modifiable to allow communication with the phpBB database tables should I choose to.

Now I’ve worked with phpBB 2.x before, I have not messed with the newer version but I am sure it is just the same, or at least pretty close.  I want to bridge this only for the functionality and convenience of my customers.  The bridge should take no more than a day or two including bug testing but the real question is, do I release the code?  The code replacement will have to be ‘hard coded’ meaning no plugins, you would be modifying the actual OR core code itself, meaning that any mistakes could be deadly for your installation if you don’t know what you’re doing.  I don’t know if I’ll release the bridge code or not, maybe if I get a few responses after I’ve finished the code!  Who knows.

I so need this help. Did you happen to complete the bridge? If so, could you help?

Sadly no, I have not had the time to even complete the VirtualLand.org portal yet. On top of that, I still have to complete a new server setup for SecondLife. I will make a post as soon as I get it finished, or even begin work on it.
